Jonathan Barnbrook tips

Whilst I was studying at university we had British graphic designer and typographer Jonathan Barnbrook come and give us a talk. The other day I found my notes for this, so I thought I’ll pop them down here for all to see.

Suggestions for students

  • Be nice
  • Have passion
  • Don’t think you can do everything
  • Realise you know nothing (he didn’t use quite the same language)
  • Don’t be too commercial
  • Be serious & don’t dabble- know your craft and your context
  • Have a desire to change the world
  • Get an accountant

Basic typography for students

  • You have no choice - you must be interested in typography
  • 95% of students I see know nothing about typography
  • The foundation of typography is attention to detail
  • Typography provides a proper structure for communication
  • Typography provides a proper structure for experimentation
  • Typography makes you more employable
