Whilst I was studying at university we had British graphic designer and typographer Jonathan Barnbrook come and give us a talk. The other day I found my notes for this, so I thought I’ll pop them down here for all to see.
Suggestions for students
- Be nice
- Have passion
- Don’t think you can do everything
- Realise you know nothing (he didn’t use quite the same language)
- Don’t be too commercial
- Be serious & don’t dabble- know your craft and your context
- Have a desire to change the world
- Get an accountant
Basic typography for students
- You have no choice - you must be interested in typography
- 95% of students I see know nothing about typography
- The foundation of typography is attention to detail
- Typography provides a proper structure for communication
- Typography provides a proper structure for experimentation
- Typography makes you more employable
